Assistant Director for First Generation Students

As an integral component of University Life at George Mason University, ODIME engages the campus community in the exploration of diversity, identity development, and cultural competency. With student support and advocacy as a primary focal area of our work, ODIME offers a myriad of services and resources to assist our diverse student body with success at and beyond Mason.


ODIME seeks an Assistant Director to support the university’s initiatives/efforts to recruit and retain first generation students. This position will be a strong student advocate that will champion the needs of first generation students, which includes maintaining current knowledge of the needs of specialized student cohorts (i.e., undocumented, low income, transfers, out-of-state students, etc.). Duties include:

  • Assisting with university-wide initiatives for all first generation students, including orientation activities, support groups, and other cocurricular engagement opportunities;
  • Supporting an ongoing strategic plan that focuses on the development and growth of the university’s first generation student population;
  • Assist with the daily operations of the Student Transition Empowerment Program (STEP);
  • Assist with the supervision of all student staff affiliated with STEP, including mentors, the logistics team, and faculty/staff volunteers;
  • Advise/establish affiliated student organizations that support first generation students;
  • Oversee the planning, implementation, and evaluation of UndocuAlly workshops, and provide direct support services to students;
  • Serve as a resource for first generation students to support, track, and navigate their curricular and cocurricular collegiate experiences;
  • Implement programs/services to support access, retention, and student success;
  • Advise and advocate on behalf of underrepresented and marginalized identity groups as a member of the ODIME staff;
  • Collaborate with University Life and academic colleagues on programs that enhance/support institutional diversity, to include cultural competency and awareness workshops;
  • Represent the department and/or division on university-wide committees;
  • Perform administrative duties and manage assigned budget(s);
  • Participate in the ongoing progressive development of the department, to include departmental and division-wide strategic planning; and
  • Perform additional responsibilities as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • An earned master’s degree in higher education, counseling, education, or a related field;
  • Experience working with undocumented students;
  • Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as required;
  • Strong interpersonal communication, community building, organizational, and time management skills;
  • The ability to design and implement creative programs to support the academic, interpersonal, and career success of students;
  • Prior experience providing support services in a collegiate environment;
  • Ability to serve as a student advocate; and
  • Experience working with diverse student populations.
